Let’s Have A Chat

Hello everyone! This space has been on pause for a while. The chakra series will be completed, I promise, but today I just wanted to pop in for a little chat with all of you. We are living in interesting times, on both a collective and personal level. Our world, and our way of life has changed drastically, leaving many in a space of figuring out how to move forward. While it’s easy to fall into a state of anxiety, negativity, and even anger, I’ve been thinking a lot over the past year of what to do with all of it, as I’m sure many of you are.

There is so much opportunity in this moment for humanity to shift into a way of being which benefits all of us. The division we’re all seeing may feel like something which has happened overnight, but it has been simmering for a very long time. In the Western world, we have become conditioned to think of things mainly in terms of just ourselves. I am well aware that this is something which we have become trained to do. It’s just time for us to begin saying that enough is enough. Since the beginning of human “civilization”, there has always been a ruling class and then the rest of us. However, until not that long ago in our history, the main part of society was very much centered in a collective mindset.

In antiquity, humans lived in harmony with the planet. Sure, that’s just the way things were then due to lack of technology, but things were organized in such a way that everyone was considered in daily life. Some were the hunters and gatherers, others performed tasks such as making clothing or other times, and then there were the elders, who were revered for their wisdom and teachings. Groups of different societies would trade with one another, meaning that the things a collective did not have available to themselves, they could barter with one another, making life better for everyone. Yes, I know that wars over territory and property go back to time eternal and that it wasn’t a utopia. I’m just saying that there was a more collective mindset, which we are sorely lacking today.

In more modern life, there was still more of a collective mentality in which farmers were able to produce more food due to new technology coming into the picture. Yet, there was still a lot of trade going on. The farmers had the food, others became able to make more clothing and other items which made food preservation and creature comforts available, faster. People traded valuable, life sustaining goods and services. The doctors would heal the sick for eggs, meats, produce, or other goods. This was in a time in which “money” was becoming more widely used, but many people in general society simply had very little money, yet they had goods or knowledge which was every bit as treasured as cash.

The industrial era, kicked things off in the direction in which we’ve found ourselves today. It isn’t that modern conveniences are bad. They are very far from it (depending on how they are produced and used, with the planet and sustaining life in mind), however our society began drifting more and more to the mindset of consuming, and using technology mainly to benefit those who could afford to purchase it. The rest of us became more and more conditioned to live a life of production and needing to individually seek resources in order to survive. New technologies have every potential to benefit everyone, yet they have been used to create a society in which concern for the collective has been switched off in many parts of the world.

In saying all of this, I am not pointing fingers or trying to induce guilt. Far from it. I just wished to discuss what has been crossing my spiritual radar. The time in which we are currently living is presenting a valuable opportunity to regroup as a collective, and begin to recreate our existence here on Earth. We can once again realize how much we need one another, working with the whole in mind as we meet our own needs. This is the good part.

We have the ability to do this right now, but after all of our years of conditioning, it isn’t something which is going to happen overnight (no matter how much I wish it would). The ruling class (the handful with the most control over resources) has trained the collective to turn a blind eye to the future survival of the planet, and to become a cash and consumer based society. Right now, we have many who have been so ingrained with the “looking out for yourself” mentality that it is going to take a lot of work. What can we do about it?

I truly believe that the more of us who start to shift our personal lives back in the other direction, the better. This means turning away from sources of division, conducting our lives with service to the whole as much as possible. It can be as small as using as many planet friendly products as we can afford, and recycling. It can be giving of our time to things such as food banks or community gardens if physically able. It can be standing up as a collective to the things we know are destroying us, by refusing to partake in those things or going further to form collectives which work to make change. The only way we can do this is together. Whatever we are able to do which benefits the well being of humanity, no matter how big or small has always mattered, but it matters now more than ever.

Of course, we aren’t going to be able to get everyone to jump on board at once, but I fully believe that there are enough of us out there who are ready for this change to begin turning the tide. The first step is to reopen our hearts to a more gentle, centered way of being. Yes, we are in a fight, but there are more ways than one to do so. We’ve been fighting each other, to the detriment of the all. Getting into the best mindset individually is the first step, before coming together. It’s time to shed what we’ve been taught to think and believe about how to live. We all have the collective mindset living deep within, and it’s time to reclaim it. Some of us are already doing a great deal in this respect. We simply need more people to step forward. This is getting much longer than I intended. There is just so much more that I could say! This is a good start.

I wish to end this by posing a question to all who read this. I’d love to hear what you think, or even what you’re already doing. As for me, I’ve been retraining myself to approach life from a love perspective for the whole, while seeking things which really matter to “fight” for. That’s simplified, but the briefest way to state it.

The Third Eye Chakra

Today I’ll be going over the third eye chakra, which is located in the center of the forehead, just above and between the eyebrows.

It is associated with the color indigo, and with a combination of all of the elements and light. Being associated with light, stated simply, means that this chakra’s energy helps to illuminate all things in our lives. It is known to many as being the chakra of intuition, which it is, however, there is much more to it. This chakra shines a light for us on matters ranging from our place in the universe, imagination, and governs altered states of consciousness.

A few crystals which are excellent for working with this chakra are amethyst, iolite, and labradorite .  The third eye chakra is associated with the planet Saturn, the sun, and the moon. This chakra can be viewed as our intuition and creative/imagination center, helping us to tap into our intuitive ability, wisdom, creative inspiration, and the subtle energies around us. I recommend picking up at least one of the crystals mentioned above this week, to help get this chakra balanced before we get to the exercise I’ll be sharing at the end of this series. Below are some of the key points of the physical and spiritual/emotional functions of the third eye chakra.

Physical:

Brain.

Pituitary gland.

Eyes.

Nose.

Spiritual/Emotional:

Intuition.

Emotional intelligence.

Wisdom.

Imagination.

Truth.

The third eye chakra is primarily associated with feminine qualities. When it is balanced it can help us feel more spiritually aligned, have more clarity, tune in to our intuition, embrace truth and change, be more creative, and foster open-mindedness. As the seat of our intuition and creativity, it is important to note that a blocked third eye chakra can be soothed through meditation, creative expression, reflecting upon how imagination can be used more often, journaling, daydreaming, and spending time in nature (especially in the sunshine or moonlight).

While covering each chakra, this paragraph will (usually) remain unchanged, with the exception of the color visualization. Please spend time this week visualizing this chakra as a still, vibrant, indigo wheel in the location described at the beginning of the post, as this will make the exercise at the end of this series a bit easier. If you’ve picked up one or more of the crystals listed above (which I hope you will), holding this crystal while visualizing the chakra will start to do some healing on it before we even get to the final exercise. For all of the individual chakras we will cover in this series, please go gently and get to know them without trying to get them moving until we get to the final exercise. It is always important when working with your energy to go into it slowly and learn a bit before diving in head first.

The Throat Chakra

Welcome to the continuation of the chakra series. Today I’ll be going over the throat chakra, which is located in the neck, the area near the adam’s apple.

It is associated with the color blue, and with the element of ether. For those not familiar with the element of ether, the simplified explanation is that it can be thought of as the space around and through all things. In reference to the throat chakra, you can think of the ether element as being the space through which sound passes.

A few crystals which are excellent for working with this chakra are lapis lazuli, turquoise, and aquamarine.  The throat chakra is associated with the planet Mercury. This chakra can be viewed as our communication, honesty, and truth center, helping us to speak our truth and express our creativity. I recommend picking up at least one of the crystals mentioned above this week, to help get this chakra balanced before we get to the exercise I’ll be sharing at the end of this series. Below are some of the key points of the physical and spiritual/emotional functions of the throat chakra.

Physical:

The throat.

The thyroid and parathyroid.

The mouth, neck, and shoulders.

The vocal cords.

Spiritual/Emotional:

Communication.

Creativity.

Self knowledge.

Honesty.

*This chakra is strongly related to career as well.

The throat chakra is primarily associated with masculine qualities, but is believed to help balance the masculine and feminine energies. When it is balanced it can help us to communicate with more honesty and confidence, partly due to the levels of self knowledge it brings. The throat chakra helps us to foster creativity too, which makes sense, because being more in touch with ourselves and the world at large more openly unlocks creative expression. As the seat of our communication, it is important to note that a blocked throat chakra can be soothed through sound therapies, and by expressing ourselves through writing (think broadly here, as it can be anything from writing poetry, journaling, or letters etc.), speech, or artistic outlet.

While covering each chakra, this paragraph will (usually) remain unchanged, with the exception of the color visualization. Please spend time this week visualizing this chakra as a still, vibrant, blue wheel in the location described at the beginning of the post, as this will make the exercise at the end of this series a bit easier. If you’ve picked up one or more of the crystals listed above (which I hope you will), holding this crystal while visualizing the chakra will start to do some healing on it before we even get to the final exercise. Importance of Self Care

Hello everyone! Instead of our usual Mystical Monday post, I’m dropping by with a quick note about how important it is to recognize when we need to tend to our own self care. That’s the type of week that it is for me. While I thought about skipping a post altogether, I thought this was a good opportunity to highlight this topic.

Without going into any personal details, I will just say that I am in need of extra self care on all levels right now. The fact that I am “allowing” myself to do this speaks volumes about my growth and progress. In blogs past, I’d often just push myself to make a post and not only did it not do me much good, the quality of the post suffered as well. I’m very fortunate in that I am in a position to be able to wipe my schedule clean to tend to my needs. This was the case in the past as well. I just didn’t do it. As most of us in the Western world, and likely many other areas of our globe, we are born into a culture of working ourselves into the ground…sucking it up…putting on a brave face…whatever.

I’m well aware that many do not have the luxury of simply being able to wipe their schedules clean. However, I would like to encourage everyone to fit in extra self care time whenever and however they can. It will look different to each of us. The important thing is that we take the time to discover what it looks like for us, and get creative with ways to take as much time as we possibly can to care for ourselves. After all, it’s pretty hard to draw water to quench another’s thirst from an empty well.

The chakra series will resume next Monday, unless I can manage to make it back here before the week is over and post it another day this week. I hope that all of you will be sure to tend to yourselves as well. Afford yourselves as much if not more kindness, compassion, and love as you would someone else.

The Heart Chakra

Welcome to another Mystical Monday. Today I’ll be going over the heart chakra, which is located in the middle of the chest, from right above the sternum, up to just below the collar bones.

It is associated with the color green, and with the element of air.

A few crystals which are excellent for working with this chakra are peridot, jade, and rose quartz.  The heart chakra is associated with the planet Venus. This chakra can be viewed as our love center and the connector between the physical and spiritual. It is associated with our ability to feel love, compassion, and happiness. I recommend picking up at least one of the crystals mentioned above this week, to help get this chakra balanced before we get to the exercise I’ll be sharing at the end of this series. Below are some of the key points of the physical and spiritual/emotional functions of the heart chakra.

Physical:

The circulatory system.

The heart.

The upper back and shoulders.

The thymus gland.

Spiritual/Emotional:

Trust.

Worthiness.

Compassion.

Ability to love self and others without conditions.

The heart chakra is associated with feminine qualities, and as our love center, when it is balanced it can help us to foster more love and connection with others, ourselves, and on a deeper level the world around us. The heart chakra helps us to foster trust, empathy, gratitude, and forgiveness. As the seat of our feelings, it is important to note that a blocked heart chakra can be soothed through the release of crying or by loving physical touch.

While covering each chakra, this paragraph will (usually) remain unchanged, with the exception of the color visualization. Please spend time this week visualizing this chakra as a still, green wheel in the location described at the beginning of the post, as this will make the exercise at the end of this series a bit easier. If you’ve picked up one or more of the crystals listed above (which I hope you will), holding this crystal while visualizing the chakra will start to do some healing on it before we even get to the final exercise. This time around, I’d like to recommend getting two crystals for this chakra, one of the green ones and a rose quartz. For all of the individual chakras we will cover in this series, please go gently and get to know them without trying to get them moving until we get to the final exercise. It is always important when working with your energy to go into it slowly and learn a bit before diving in head first.

Chakra Series ~ Midway Review & Warm-up Exercise

Welcome to another Mystical Monday post. This week, since we are at the mid-point of learning about the chakra system, it’s a good time to go back and review what has been covered so far. In addition, if you are either just coming in or have not had time to collect some of the recommended stones and familiarize yourself with them, please do so. As you go through the next week, reviewing the material and working with the crystals, I’d also like for you to work on the little warm up exercise below, which will be a big help when the full exercise is given at the end of the series. For the next month, as we cover the remaining chakras, please continue to do this exercise at least a few times a week. You do not need to spend copious amounts of time on it, just enough to make it easy for yourself to perform.

The exercise involves working with visualization, which can be difficult for many, which is a big reason for taking this mid-point review break. It’s important to work on learning to visualize in order to perform the final exercise which will come out in about five weeks. This will give you a good bit of time to figure out not only how to do it, but which way(s) work best for you.

Imagine a bright, pure white light above your head. Once you have been able to see/sense/feel it, imagine the light coming down onto the top of your head. The way that you see the light coming onto your head is going to be whichever way seems to go easier or feel more natural to you. One way which has worked for me are to see it coming down almost like the light of the sun radiates down upon us.

The method I recommend most for the final exercise is the rain/waterfall method. Once you are seeing the light above your head, see it cascading down from that source as either rain or a gentle waterfall. If you can use the rain/waterfall method, please do, as it will really come in handy at the end of this series. I personally enjoy the rain/waterfall method because sometimes visualization can be difficult (even for those who’ve been doing it for a long time). You can practice this in the shower, using the water as a really good aid.

You may find other ways when you get started on this, and that is not only okay, it’s perfect…for you, and will be effective. Have fun with the exercise, and in spending time with your crystals. See you back here next week!

The Solar Plexus Chakra

Welcome to another Mystical Monday. Today I’ll be going over the solar plexus chakra, which is located smack dab in the middle of the abdomen, from right above the belly button, up to almost the breastbone.

It is associated with the color yellow, and with the element of fire.

A few crystals which are excellent for working with this chakra are citrine, golden quartz, and tiger’s eye.  The solar plexus chakra is associated with the sun. This powerful chakra can be seen as our internal fire. It is largely connected to our ability to tap into our personal power, and radiate it into the world. I recommend picking up at least one of the crystals mentioned above this week, to help get this chakra balanced before we get to the exercise I’ll be sharing at the end of this series. Below are some of the key points of the physical and spiritual/emotional functions of the solar plexus chakra.

Physical:

The stomach.

The pancreas.

The spleen.

Other digestive organs, and the important roles that overall gut health plays in the rest of the body.

Immunity.

Spiritual/Emotional:

Personal power.

Wisdom.

Being able to bring our desires to fruition.

Self image and confidence.

The solar plexus chakra is associated with masculine qualities, and as our internal powerhouse it can be said that it functions to give us our drive, focus, and willpower to move forward on our path and in our relationships. When in balance, this chakra helps us to be assertive and at the same time have the ability to be in harmony with others and our surroundings. The solar plexus chakra is also associated with the autonomic nervous system, and assists our body to have healthier responses to stress.

The Sacral Chakra

We are back with another Mystical Monday post. The focus for today is on the sacral chakra, which is located between the belly button and pelvic area.

It is associated with the color orange, and with the element of water.

There are two main crystals which serve the purpose of either opening or soothing this chakra. This is important because depending on whether this chakra is closed or overactive, it’s key to use the appropriate crystals. These two crystals are orange carnelian and moonstone. An interesting tidbit of information is that this chakra is associated with the moon, which may make the moonstone a bit more poignant for some of you, but either crystal above is perfect. I recommend picking up one or both of them before we get to the end of the series, and the exercise, in order to help get this chakra balanced before we get to that point. Below are some of the key points of the physical and spiritual/emotional functions of the sacral chakra.

Physical:

Pelvic organs.

The kidneys and bladder.

Lower back.

Lower part of the digestive system.

The spleen which plays a key role in filtering the blood and with the immune system.

Spiritual/Emotional:

Creation and expression of our individuality.

Creativity.

Passion and nurturing.

Ability to receive and express love.

As you may have noted, several of the properites of the sacral chakra are very feminine in nature. This chakra plays a very important role psychologically. When it is in balance it assists us in being ourselves, including discovering who we are and being able to confidently express ourselves in a variety of ways. The sacral chakra holds the key to love, creativity, and sexuality.

Please spend time this week visualizing this chakra as a still, orange wheel in the location described at the beginning of the post, as this will make the exercise at the end of this series a bit easier. If you’ve picked up one or both of the crystals listed above (which I hope you will), holding this crystal while visualizing the chakra will start to do some healing on it before we even get to the final exercise. In Trying Times, Meditate!

To say that we live in trying times would be an understatement. In addition to the difficulties people face as a part of life, we are living in a time of challenges on a scale which most people alive today have not experienced. I’ve always been an advocate for meditation as a must in everyone’s toolbox to help them to stay centered, grounded, and clear during both normal (to you) and challenging times.

The reason for including the Solfeggio scale above is that I wanted to share something which can be very helpful when it’s hard to be still or focused for meditating. There are a plethora of videos which utilize these frequencies on YouTube which can be accessed for free to anyone with internet access. I’ve found many of these to be invaluable. As someone who has been meditating for decades, I still encounter challenges when it comes to stilling my mind and body enough. What can I say? I can be a little hyper, and still get overwhelmed when it comes to times of intensity sometimes. Oh, the humanity!

What I love about frequency videos is that when you are experiencing difficulties or challenges in any given area, you can simply do a search for that frequency and pick one which sits well with you. There are many channels and creators making these, with their own styles. Whether or not any particular one can put you in the zone depends on a lot of personal factors, so you may have to click through a handful of them to find the one which suits you best at any given time. The use of headphones of earbuds is a must, due to the binaural nature of this type of media.

Once you find one that feels right, simply settle in and enjoy. Some people have a tendency to get really spaced out while listening to this type of material, so please do not do this while performing any activity which requires concentration in order to be safe. I admit, that there are certain ones which I use while walking in very familiar and safe settings sometimes or even while making art. However, before attempting to do anything like this, familiarize yourself with how you react. If after listening for a few months, you feel you could perform some rote activities, start inside your home doing something like slowly walking from room to room or within the same room. We all react to things differently and erring on the side of caution is a must. After all, meditation is meant to be healing, relaxing, and sometimes empowering- not something that’ll land ourselves or someone else in the emergency room.
